Michael & Mwavisu Beasley
Michael and Mwavisu are proving that people from diverse geographic areas really do "care" about the shortage of health workers in Africa. The couple recently started a Michigan chapter of the Touch Foundation's Young Leaders volunteer group. They will be hosting a fundraiser this October. Both Michael and Mwavisu have ties to Tanzania. The couple married in 2004 and have two daughters.

Michael is currently a medical student at Michigan State University's College of Human Medicine. He is also a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist employed with Sleep Diagnostics of Michigan, where is he is responsible for the treatment of patients with various types of sleep disorders. Previously, Michael was a Peace Corps volunteer in Shinyanga, Tanzania, where he was active in educational and health promotion activities for secondary school students throughout the Lake Zone. He holds a B.S. in Zoology from Michigan State University.

Mwavisu is a Tanzanian national currently pursuing her Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology from Michigan State University. Her family's ancestral home is Tarime, which is in the Lake Zone's Mara region. Mwavisu spent much of her childhood growing up in Mara and Shinyanga, before finishing secondary school on the coast at Tanga Technical Secondary School. Mwavisu intends to attend medical school upon completion of her undergraduate work and then looks forward to dedicating herself to the development of her home country.

Sophie & Jessie
Sophie Stenbeck of Los Angeles wanted to get involved in the Who Cares? Campaign in some capacity and decided running 26.2 miles through sun-drenched Los Angeles was as good a way as any. She has recruited a running partner, Jessie Lamando; together, they raised over $17,000 for the Touch Foundation and ran the LA Marathon on March 21, 2010.

Sophie is not new to supporting important causes. She is responsible for coordinating Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives for the Kinnevik Group and served as a founding board member of Queen Silvia's World Childhood Foundation, an organization addressing the needs of children in poverty worldwide. Most recently, Sophie founded Remedee, a non-profit that utilizes the power of media to maximize social impact. For Jessie, this marathon is her first introduction to the Touch Foundation. A sales representative for Endo Pharmaceuticals, Jessie is finding that our mission resonates with many of her colleagues in the healthcare profession. We are inspired by Sophie and Jessie’s spirit and athletic stamina and thank them for supporting the training of healthcare workers in Tanzania!

Alexandra
Growing up in a developing nation was part of what led to my concern for humanitarian efforts.  When I learned about the Touch Foundation and the work they do to train doctors in Tanzania, I became even more eager to put my passion for graphics and web design to use raising awareness for a cause I cared about.  Life is busy, and sometimes it’s difficult to think beyond our own borders.  If people aren’t informed about the shortage of doctors and hospitals in sub-Saharan Africa, they can’t take action.   I volunteer to design in the hopes of catching attention and consequently helping people take action.  Nothing makes me happier than doing work I truly enjoy for a cause I wholeheartedly support.

Alexandra Miller is a graphic and web designer with a passion for humanitarian and environmental causes.
She is currently completing a major in Foreign Affairs and a minor in Media Studies at the University of Virginia.

John & Andrew
Skilled online marketing professionals, Touch Foundation volunteers Andrew Chomer and John Malysiak are experts in “Search Marketing” and are playing a vital role to maximize the Touch Foundation and Who Cares? Campaign’s presence online. By day, both Andrew and John work at Resolution Media, which is part of Omnicom’s media arm. John and Andrew’s clients have included Eli Lilly, Bank of America, Pepsi, Merck and Johnson & Johnson, among others.

Specifically, Andrew and John are helping Touch to implement an online advertising account, which we received as an in-kind donation from the Google Grants program in July. The Google Grants program empowers nonprofit organizations like Touch to achieve their goals by promoting their websites via advertising on Google. Google ads appear when users search on Google. For example when you search for "global health" on Google, text ads related to world poverty appear on the right hand side. When you click on one of the ads, you are brought to the website being advertised.

Our online advertising account from Google can be used it in a variety of ways, including general outreach, fundraising activities, and recruitment of volunteers. Ultimately, Andrew Chomer and John Malysiak, together with the Google Grants program, are helping Touch to increase our number of followers and supporters, enabling us to improve the lives of Tanzanians.

Matt
“Working with the Touch Foundation’s Young Leaders group has been one of the best experiences I have had since coming to New York City. I have had the opportunity to plan numerous charity events ranging from parties at nightclubs to performances at the Rose Theater.

Through the Young Leaders group, I have met and become friends with numerous intelligent, interesting, fun, and socially conscious people. But more than that, as a young person who spends much of my time on such mundane activities as editing spreadsheets in a glass cubicle, working for this cause provides an opportunity to help make a positive impact on the world, and to be a part of the solution for one of the great problems of our time – the health crisis in sub-Saharan Africa. I look forward to continuing my efforts with Young Leaders through the newly launched Who Cares? Campaign.”

Matt is an Associate at 3i Growth Capital in New York. Prior to joining 3i, he was a Business Analyst at McKinsey & Company. He has volunteered for the Touch Foundation since 2006 and is a member of our Young Leaders Executive Committee.

Amani's Team Tanzania
“Team Tanzania is made of Tanzanians and friends living and working in United States, who feel the need to support Touch Foundation's efforts to address the state of heath care system back in Tanzania. While being abroad disconnects us - for better or for worse - from realities of poor health care infrastructure, we believe we have better opportunities in helping raising awareness and fundraising, to bring about change, albeit small, in overall access, delivery and quality of care in Tanzania.”

Amani Kitali, who hails from Tanzania and is now based in New York City, is a member of our Young Leaders Executive Committee. Together with other compatriots, Amani started “Team Tanzania” in early 2009 to raise money for the Touch Foundation and give back to his country. So far, most of their fundraising efforts have relied on the online tool, Firstgiving.com.

Amani currently works as a clinical trial analyst with Schering Plough Research Institute in New Jersey. In the past, he has been heavily involved in field and lab based epidemiology research, with main focus on HIV-AIDS and AIDS-related cancers. Amani also writes a public health column for a local Tanzanian magazine.

Stasia & Liz
“We would like to thank everyone who made our half marathon a successful fundraiser! We managed to raise $1,605 by putting on our training shoes for training health workers in Tanzania. The money that we have raised is going to make a real difference in Tanzania. To put it in perspective, it is enough to purchase a new computer and Internet connection for students and doctors to get the latest information from medical journals or a new suction machine crucial to allow newborns to take their very first breath.”

On May 3, 2009, Stasia and Liz were among 3,5000 participants in the 13.2 miles in the 2009 RXR / TIAA-CREF Long Island Marathon: Festival of Races. The two young runners raised money for the Touch Foundation as part of the Who Cares? Campaign. Stasia and Liz finished within 5 minutes of each other after about 2 hours of pounding the pavement. Laura & Robert
The setting sun was a gorgeous backdrop for a fundraiser cocktail party that raised over $7,000, hosted by Laura and Robert on Long Island on May 9, 2009. About 40 people mingled over drinks and hors d'oeuvres as they learned about the need to train health workers in Tanzania. Robert and Laura give a special thanks to their high school volunteers who gave up their time to help serve drinks and food. This is the third fundraiser that Laura and Robert have generously hosted for the Touch Foundation. They have been enthusiastic supporters since 2004 and we commend them on their efforts and future contributions.

Laura tutors physics and is a wicked tennis player. Robert runs a small business and enjoys fencing.

Campaign. Whether establishing and maintaining our Twitter presence, developing our blog, or providing strategic direction for the Campaign, these two volunteers have dedicated significant resources and expertise to the Touch Foundation and have been indispensible to the success of the Campaign!

By day, Adam is an Emerging Media Strategist at PHD. He has created campaigns for a wide range of clients including HBO, Discovery, Bissell, Hormel, Charles Schwab, Hyatt, American Legacy (Truth and EX) and Old Navy to name a few. Robert, a Touch Foundation Young Leader, is a Managing Partner at RDC Unlimited. He provides interactive marketing consulting services for both commercial and non-profit organizations. Joanna
'Tanzania, there is 1 doctor for every 30,000 Tanzanians.' It was really that statistic that moved me to get involved with the Touch Foundation. I remember going home after an event, taking out a calculator, and realizing that even if that one doctor worked every day of the year, it would still be physically impossible for him or her to see 82 patients a day. It's crazy to think that you might only be able to see your doctor once every four years, even if you are very ill. As a medical student, Touch Foundation's mission to create a sustainable health care system with sufficient health care workers is obviously close to my heart, but I don't think you need to be in the medical field to see why the work theTouch Foundation is doing is so important. At the end of the day, every person who cares and is moved to action counts because action creates awareness, and awareness raises funds, and funds train health care workers in a country where health care workers are desperately needed.

Joanna is a second-year medical student at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Human Biology and an area of concentration in International Health and Development. Previously, she interned at PSI, an international social marketing NGO.

Meet the Volunteers
The Who Cares? Campaign is mobilizing volunteers from far and wide to raise funds for and awareness about the shortage of doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers in Africa. To accomplish these goals, Who Cares? volunteers are running, "tweeting," blogging, selling Who Cares? tote bags, and organizing cocktail parties. Meet some of them at the right!
